Phyllis smiling in the overgrown yard after neighbors surprised her with a Sunday cleanup

A Sunday morning surprise

Meet Phyllis.

Sometimes being a neighbor means arriving with tools, ambition, and enough helping hands to make a hard task feel possible.

Phyllis had tried several times to trim the growth beside her home and along the backyard fence. But when much of it climbed past five or six feet, the work became difficult to manage alone.

So on a Sunday morning, we surprised her. We showed up with tools and a plan to tackle the overgrowth along the side of the house, throughout the backyard, and woven tightly into the fence line.

We started by pulling rooted weeds by hand. We sawed through stubborn roots and used a chainsaw where thick growth had become tangled in the fences. We cleared a path through the trees toward the alley and made a huge dent in the shrubbery and the backyard fence line.

For a few hours, the yard filled with work, gratitude, and plenty of good laughs.

A thunderstorm finally called the workday short. But by then, Phyllis had a little more space around her home—and a clearer view of what the yard could become.

She offered to let neighbors use the reclaimed space for flowers, vegetables, and extra play room for their little pets. What began as a cleanup became an invitation: more space not just for one neighbor, but for neighbors to share.

A little more space.

A lot more possibility.

Room for flowers and vegetables. Room for little pets to play. Room for neighbors to imagine what they can grow together.

Kindness still lives here.
